Birmingham News February 14, 1907
Mr. C. V. Carlton, who returned last night from Ashland, Clay County, reports a
serious conflagration in that city in the early hours of Tuesday morning, which
destroyed about one-fourth of the south side of the public square. Three
business houses were consumed and a fourth one demolished to prevent the spread
of the fire. The extent of the loss is not known, nor is the amount of the
insurance carried on the buildings or stocks in the burnt district.

Lineville Headlight May 17, 1907:
On last Monday night about midnight fire visited our neighboring town, Ashland,
for the second time within the last three months The first fire burned. four
wooden structures, on the south side of the square, and the fire last Monday
night burned seven wooden building on the east side of the square, being all the
business houses on the east side of the square. The fire originated in the
grocery store occupied by Dan Kirk on the south-east corner of the block and is
thought to have been the work of an incendiary as there was no fire in any of
the buildings during the day. The loss is estimated at about $7500 which was
partially covered by insurance.
