Anniston Star June 5, 1931
The Mystery of strange tracks that have been appearing in the Barfield community
in Clay County tor the past four years was solved problem today and an alligator
measuring seven feet was a captive at the farm home of W L. Britt who resides
three miles north of Lineville. After a battle of more than an hour, the
alligator was captured by three white persons and an aged negro in a ravine in
the pasture of the Britt's farm. Mr. Britt came to Anniston today in search of
knowledge about alligators. He said he did not know what, or when to feed the
reptile. He went to Oxford take to talk.to J. A. Hulsey who gave him some high
points about the care of alligators, the latter having had experience with them
at the lake. For the past four years strange tracks have been appearing in the
Barfield community. Many persons were puzzled over what was making the tracks.
All kinds of stories were told about them beast were "seen" and the story goes
that some people were actually scared. Cows in the pasture on Mr. Britt's farm
had been frightened when they went to the branch to get water. They were
frightened Thursday afternoon and Mr. Britt went to see what the trouble was. He
discovered the alligator, in a six-foot ditch where the small stream ran. Mr.
Britt's son, Byron, who graduated from the State Secondary High School at
Lineville this year, Willie Cargile, a neighbor and Alt Childs, aged negro who
works on the Britt farm, composed the quartet of aggressors who finally captured
the alligator. A rope was used to lariat the alligator. After the rope was
securely around the alligator, it began revolving. Mr. Britt said the alligator
finally grew tired and then he was tied better with the rope and was taken to
Mr. Britt's home. News of the capture spread rapidly throughout the north end of
Clay County, and more than 200 persons went to the Britt farm to see the
alligator before dark Thursday. Scores of persons were curious today and went to
see it. Mr. Britt said he did not know whether he would keep the alligator, or
not. If I can sell it, I think I will. If I had something to go with it. I might
start a zoo. I live on the highway.
