Ashland Progress Aug 11, 1932:
James Stephens, one of the negroes who was lodged in jail here last week,
suspected of having attacked a young white woman near Delta, was identified by
the young woman as the man who had assaulted her. This took place last Thursday
and Thursday night a group of angry men from the northern part of the county
threatened to storm the jail. Suspecting, however, that some such attempt might
be made, Sheriff Phillips and Deputy Sheriff McCollum, took the prisoner from
the jail a short while before the mob arrived and by a back route from the jail
yard departed with him. and took him to Kilby Prison, Montgomery, where he was
safely incarnated. After the visitors were informed that the negro had been
taken away and were permitted to verify the statement by having some of their
number enter and search the jail, they dispersed without undue demonstration.
