Ashland Progress August 24, 1933
Albert Smith, well known farmer of the Cleveland's Crossroads community, was in
custody at the Sheriff's office this morning for slaying a negro in his apple-
orchard last night. Mr. Smith is said to have a fine orchard of fruit which he
glows for commercial purposes and, according to reports, he had been missing
apples from the orchard some time. So last night he was watching the orchard when
some parties entered it. He fired on them with the result that one, a negro, was
struck in the body and killed. The others escaped.
