Ashland Progress
Hershey Horton, negro, with a record of having served several terms in states
penitentiaries, is now in the Clay County jail with a charge of murder docketed
against him for the fatal stabbing of Buster Jordan, another negro, in an
altercation, which occurred in the western section of the city last Friday
night. According to statements of eyewitnesses, Horton was said to have been
drinking and threatening a disturbance, when Jordan and one or two other negroes
attempted to persuade him to go home. According to witnesses Horton resented the
interest shown by the negroes in his welfare and began cutting Jordan. He is
said to have cut the victim until he fell, and then pounced on him and continued
to cut, one of the knife thrusts severing Jordan's jugular vein, causing almost
instant death. Horton left the scene of the fight, and officers were notified.
The sheriff's force put the bloodhounds on the killer's trail and tracked him to
the house where he resided, and to which place he had gone to evade the
officers. The arrest was made within 30 minutes after the crime was committed.
Horton will not be allowed bond and his case is scheduled to come up for trial
at the fall term of Circuit Court to be held in October.
