MONTGOMERY, WILLIAM G., Birmingham, Ala. Born in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County,
W. Va.; his ancestor, John Montgomery, came from Ireland in the early part of
the eighteenth century, settled first in Pennsylvania; married Esther Houston,
from North of Ireland; settled in Augusta County, Va.; several sons became
prominent in border warfare and were soldiers of the Revolution; one of these
sons, Rev. John Montgomery, graduated from Princeton College in 1775, was one of
the founders, trustees, and first teachers of "Liberty Hall Academy," afterward
pastor of the Presbyterian Churches at Winchester, Va., and Rocky Springs,
Augusta County, Va.; married Agnes Hughart; his son John Montgomery, married
Elizabeth Nelson, daughter of Alexander Nelson, who came from Ireland about
1766; James Nelson Montgomery, father of the subject of this sketch, married Ann
S. Jacob, of Wheeling, Va., and settled in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, Va.,
now West Virginia; civil engineer and merchant.
