STEPHEN CLARK

Stephen Clark, a son of John and Hannah Clark, was born in Yorkshire,
England, in 1814. In 1830, the parents and our subject migrated to
America and located in Wheeling. For the seasons of thirteen years
he had charge of the pork houses of Echols and other parties. He was
a stone-cutter by trade, and for many years had almost the entire
sction of the city for his exclusive territory. While the stone work
was being prepared for the suspension bridge, he labored at his
trade, and subsequently had charge of from seventy-five to one
hundred workmen, who quarried the stone and prepared it for the
abutments and piers. Since 1871, he has been managing a grocery
store in South Wheeling. He was married in 1833 to Narcissa Evans,
daughter of William and Dorcas Evans, of this city. Their children
are four living and four deceased. Stephen, jr., died near
Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1863, while a member of Company D, Collins'
battery.
