A. W. MITCHELL PASSED AWAY LAST SATURDAY

Well known citizen living near Meigs answered last summons-other news from that
district

Meigs, Ga., Dec. 18.-(Special)
-At the advanced age of 75 years, Mr. A. W. Mitchell, one of the best known and
highly respected citizens and farmers of Colquitt County, living about seven
miles east of Meigs just across the line of Thomas, pased from life unto death
last Saturday, December 18th at about two o'clock a. m.
Mr. Miller died at his home, surrounded by loved ones, who had kept nightly
vigil over him for several weeks past, expecting every hour to be his last.
"Uncle Billy," as he was affectionately called by those who knew him, first saw
the light of day in Thomas County and and settled in the neighborhood where he
died, immediately after the war. He was an old Confederate soldier and followed
the fortunes of the Stars and Bars to the last, doing his duty to the cause
which he loved and thought was right at the time. After the war was over, he
shouldered his duty as a peaceable citizen and performed the same with pleasure
and benefit to his fellow countrymen up to the time of his failing health,
which was some twenty or more years gone by, since which he was barely able to
take an active part in the every day business of life.
Mr. Mitchell, it might be truthfully said, was one of the pioneer citizens of
the neighborhood in which he lived, for more than a quarter of a century. For
the past many years he was confined almost entirely to indoor life and took
little interest in the work on his farm until the last. He was a member of the
Methodist Church in good standing at the time of his death.
He leaves a wife, two daughters and four sons to mourn his loss, two of the
sons residing in Texas.
All that was mortal of the deceased was placed in the Bethel church, Colquitt
County, Sunday morning, December 19, in the presence of a large gathering of
sorrowing relatives and friends, after impressive services by the Pastor.
Every one who know "Uncle Billy" in life will say, with the writer: "Peace to
his ashes and rest to his soul."
We extend our sympathy to those left behind
