lawman dies at his home in Norman Park

Staff reports

Moultrie - Former Colquitt County Sheriff D. H. Alderman
died Thursday at his Norman Park home following a lengthy
bout with cancer. He was 77.

Alderman was involved in local law enforcement for 35
years. Of that time, he was sheriff of Colquitt County
for 20 years. Alderman retired in 1980 after completing
his fourth term in office. He was succeeded at that post
by his longtime chief deputy, the late Gene Beard.

Alderman was widely known in Georgia law enforcement.
Following his discharge from the U.S. Navy, Alderman
joined the City of Moultrie Police Department in 1946 and
rose to the post of assistant chief. He resigned from the
department to successfully run for sheriff. He began his
first term at that post in 1960.

A graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation
Academy, Alderman took several special training courses
at the University of Georgia and other locations. He
played a key role in developing the Sheriffs' Boys Ranch
in Hahira.

In 1977, Alderman was named the Georgia Moose Association
Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and in 1979 was
picked by the Georgia Sheriff's Association as its
"Sheriff of the Year."

He helped organize the Moultrie School Boy Patrol and the
Colquitt County Drug Task Force.

Upon his retirement, Alderman said serving two decades as
sheriff "fulfilled a life's dream for me."
