Norman Lester DeCosta, 86, of Nashville, formerly of Atkinson County, died 
July 27, 2009, at Louis Smith Memorial Hospital in Lakeland following an 
extended illness.
 A native of Portland, OR, he was born June 26, 1923, son of the late John and 
Nora DeCosta, was a retired self-employed landscaper and a member of Kirkland 
United Methodist Church in Pearson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and was 
said by all not only to be a good father and husband, but a good man. He was 
preceded in death by his first wife, Eileen Edith DeCosta and a step-grandson, 
Kenneth Dale Moore.
 Survivors include his wife, Vernell DeCosta of Nashville; two daughters, 
Jeannette (Patrick M.) Nugent and Nannette (Carl W.) Wood, all of Pearson; one 
son, John (Nancy) DeCosta, Sr., of Atkinson Co.; two stepsons, Steven 
(Virginia) Jenkins of Ellijay and Kenneth (Anna) Jenkins of Zephyr Hills, FL; 
two step-daughters, Kathy Swain of Albany and Jenny (Dale) Howard of Doles; 
nine grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 11 step-
great grandchildren.
 Funeral services were held July 29 at 11 a.m. at Kirkland United Methodist 
Church with Rev. Ray Bitner officiating. Special musical selections 
included "Beulah Land" and "Amazing Grace" by Charles and Tammy Wood with 
Charles Wood on guitar.
 Interment was in Kirkland United Methodist Church Cemetery with a special 
song, "Daddy's Hands," sung by Tammy Wood. Military honors were rendered by a 
U.S. Army Honor Guard Unit from Ft. Stewart.
 Active pallbearers were Norman DeCosta, Lester Nugent, John DeCosta, Jr., 
Todd Jenkins, Jason Jenkins and Jerry Goodson.
 Honorary pallbearers were member of Kirkland United Methodist Church and the 
SWMA.
 Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson was in charge of arrangements.
