Ashland Progress January 4, 1918
Another jail delivery was made last Thursday afternoon when four prisoners made
their escape by locking the janitor in a cell and rushing out through the open
door. One of the prisoners had asked to have some crackers and ginger snaps
bought him and when the janitor went to the cell door to deliver them, he was
caught and pulled in and overpowered. The four prisoners were Jay Robinson and
Chas. Hanners, of this county and two soldier boys who had escaped from camps
and who are alleged to have stolen an automobile. Two of the escapes were soon
recaptured but the others seem to have made good their get-away. Following so
soon after the recent escape of four negroes the affair has caused considerable
discussion of the jail safety problem and a number of citizens have been heard
to suggest that a residence for the jailer should be built in direct connection
with the jail.
