Anniston Star March 17, 1909
Wash Brooks, a young married man of Clay County, was released from the Calhoun
County jail on a $200 bond Friday morning. He is under charged of illicit
distilling and was given a preliminary investigation a few days ago before
Commissioner G. B. Randolph. Brooks still plant was destroyed by government
officers one day last week. It was a small plant, but capable of turning out a
limited quantity of "joyful juice" nevertheless. Brooks didn't deny the charge
against him but said he had not made much, nor did he intend to manufacture a
great quantity. He said he only wanted to make a little for use to "break out the
hives" on his baby. That's what he told the commissioner.
