Lineville Headlight August 1, 1913
After the 11:00 o'clock service at the Baptist church on last Sunday morning the
matter of building a new church was discussed, and upon motion of Walter S.
Smith that a new building be erected it was unanimously decided that the present
house of worship was inadequate and that a new building be erected. The
trustees, deacons and pastor were voted a committee to appoint a building
committee and such other committees as were deemed necessary. It is expected
that the work of erection will begin in the near future. The passing of the old
is often accompanied with a pang of regret by some who have been closely allied
with its history, and this may be true of the Lineville Baptist church, but the
membership recognizes the necessity of a new building and voted accordingly. Mr.
W. D. Haynes is the only living charter member of the church, but there are
others who have been closely associated with its history for many years. In 1839
or 1840 the Lineville Baptist church was situated about 1 1-4 miles west of
Lineville and was known as Crooked Creek church, and the first pastor called was
Dr. Henderson, of Talladega, who at that time was quite a young man and very
zealous in his work, for he walked the whole distance from Talladega to serve
his people here. In about 1853 this church was dissolved, and another church was
organized at Barfield called Alder Spring church, now known as Mt. Pleasant.
About 1859, the present Baptist church was built, but until some years after
1860 was called Crooked Creek church, when the name was changed to the Lineville
Baptist church. At this time there were only nine members, while today the
membership numbers about 400 and it is one of the strongest churches in East
Alabama. During its history the church has undergone many changes, to meet the
requirements of the increased membership until the time has arrived when the
members realize the necessity of a new building. The following men have served
as pastors of the Lineville Baptist church during its fifty years existence:
Revs. Hickey, Henry Smith, [Joseph?] Beverly, John P. Shaffer, John Scott, A.J.
Preston, R.A.J. Cumbee, W.R. Whatley, W.A.D. Upshaw, J.R. Stodghill, W.A. Lusk,
H.B. Woodward, and C.N. James.
