Clay County Watchman November 22, 1888
A gold pit at Hog Mountain, Clay County, caved in recently burying four miners
Moore, Mathews, Smith and Wheelers. In their eagerness to rescue their
unfortunate companions, the men on the outside labored diligently and excitedly,
and one of the men, Moore, was struck on the head with a pick; Wheelers died
shortly after being brought out, and it is feared that both Moore and Smith
cannot survive.
