Ashland Progress August 3, 1933
Blake Ruff, a paroled negro convict, enraged because a girl he sought to marry
failed to go to the altar with him, shot and killed four negroes near Delta
Thursday night. The victims were Eva Boyd the girl who had scorned his suit,
Walter Boyd her father, age about 50, John Henry Boyd, her younger brother, Roy

at another negro called "Slim" who lived at the Boyd home, also that a ball
fired by him at the girl's mother made a flesh wound on a child which she had in
her arms. According to reports he had gone to the Boyd home, a tenant house on
the farm of G. S. Jones, late Thursday evening to get the girl to marry him, he
is having some days before procured a marriage license. Failing to get her and
her parents consent he is said to have torn the license to pieces and began
shooting. The girl was shot through the heart, her father was shot in the head,
and her brother was shot in the back and in the head or face. The Henderson
negro was also shot in the head. After the shooting Ruff gave himself up to
Deputy Sheriffs. L. McCollum, and Walton Phillips and was placed in the county
