Obituary: THE CALDWELL PRESS, March 23, 1899: "The Death of Mrs. LaFollet
---The Death Angel has again visited the community of Mt. Zion, entering
the home of James LaFollette and claiming for its victim the beloved wife
and mother, Mrs. Ellen (Hook) LaFollette. She was born in Hampshire
County, Va., July 2, 1825 and died at Mt. Zion, O., March 2, 1899 aged 73
years, 9 months. At the age of nine years she moved with her parents to
Guernsey County, O., and in July, 1846 she was united in marriage to James
Lafollette with whom she lived for over fifty years. Thirteen children
blessed this union, four sons and nine daughters, together with her husband
are left to mourn her loss. She has been a consistent Christian and member
of Mt. Zion church for 47 years. On Dec. 12, 1895 she was stricken with
paralysis which rendered her unable to walk. And although she had been
under afflictions' heavy hand for over 3 years she bore her affliction with
Christian fortitude. The night was never so dark about her, but that there
was some light and she always saw that light. No word of complaint, of
murmur, or of impatience ever escaped her lips. She was one of those rare
spirits who always saw the bright light shining, and few ever suffered more
cheerfully. During her long illness she was surrounded by loving friends
and neighbors doing all in their power to make her last days the brightest
of her life. She was a kind and affectionate wife and loving mother,
always giving all around her good advice. Funeral services were conducted
by her pastor, Rev. C.F. Floto at the Mt. Zion Church, after which she was
laid to rest in the Mt. Zion Cemetery to await the resurrection."
