John G.J. Smith came from Monongahela County, Va., about 1849 and settled
at Carlisle, where he resided until 1875, when he removed to Monroe County,
Ind., where he owns a fine farm of 420 acres. His children were Louisa
(Rhodes), Caroline (Williams), Irwin, Mary E. (Stevens), Harriet (Curtis),
Columbia (who was married twice, first to Church Hesson; she then became 
Mrs. William McConnell); Nancy and Adelaide (both died in infancy), Helen
(McConnell), Charles, Ida (Tage) and Iret.

The elder Smith was a thorough-going farmer and held many township positions,
which he fille creditably. He was a pronounced temperance man and a worthy
member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Irwin was a private in the One
Hundred and Sixteenth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Iret was born in 1851, and in 
1872 married Miss Mary J. Price; two children: Alice L. and Mary L. The
parents are members of the Methodist Episcopal church.
