Newspaper LaFayette Sun
"The LaFayette Sun" - April 6, 1921:
In Loving Memory of Mrs. Rena Pearson.
Early on the morning of March 19, 1921, at six o'clock, just as the golden
bud within the blue was peeping through, and in the stillness of morning,
God sent His angel into her home at Roanoke, Ala., to claim the pure soul of
my precious aunt, Rena Pearson, and escorted it to Heaven, where the pearly
gates opened wide, and her sweet spirit gladly entered in, welcomed by Jesus
and loved ones gone on before. She was a strong Christian character,
possessing many virtues. The most marked was her unselfishness. She had the
rare faculty of not waiting until she could do some great thing, but in
wayside ministries she did what she could with what she had. Through the
infirmities of age, being in her seventy-fifth year, she preserved to the
last that genial, loving kindness so characteristic of her - living to make
the world about her better, and ever solicitous of the well being not only
of those nearest and dearest, but all whom the gentle current of her life
had touched. She was the very soul of hospitality and honesty. Truthfulness
and sincerity were the precious jewels that bedecked her life. She was a
great sufferer in her last days, but bore it with all patience and Christian
fortitude, never murmuring or complaining. The end was not unexpected, and
yet we were not ready to give up dear Aunt Rena. We are sadder, but Heaven
is nearer and brighter because she is there. Truly it may be said of her
"none knew her but to love her."
The kindness of loved ones, neighbors, physician and nurse - the bewildering
profusion of beautiful flowers in various design, and the sincere and well-
deserved tribute paid to her memory by her pastor, Elder J. T. Satterwhite -
bore eloquent testimony to the esteem in which she was held by those of her
church and community, who knew and loved her in life.
Accordingly, a very large concourse was present at the First Baptist Church
to attend the funeral services, which were conducted by her pastor, Elder J.
T. Satterwhite, assisted by Dr. W. P. Hines and Rev. Claud O'Rear.
We laid the temple of her sweet and beautiful spirit to rest in the family
cemetery near her earthly home.
Hours of sadness still come over us,
Tears of sadness still come over us,
We strive to hide our longing
In the midst of mirth and fun,
But we are thinking, thinking, thinking,
Of you, dearest absent one.
- Her devoted niece, Mrs. John D. Harris.
