In Memoriam.
Last Sunday night, June 28, about 10:30 o’clock our entire city was
shocked to learn of the sad and unexpected death of one of its best, foremost
and loyal citizens in the person of J. M. Megginson. His health had not
been good for several months, but he was not confined to his bed having been on
the streets only a few hours prior to his death. He had retired for the night
when his daughter, Miss Nora, heard him struggling and on going to his
assistance realized his condition, but before help could be summoned he had
passed from this world of sorrows and sufferings to the home of the soul where
sorrows and afflictions are unknown and no more partings and sad
goodbyes; but to dwell forever in blessed peace and love.
He was born in Chambers County, Alabama, November 22, 1855. There he
grew to manhood and in 1874 was married to Miss Missouri Simms. To this union
eight children were born, seven of whom survive, one having died in infancy.
Those surviving are J. H. Megginson, Denison, Tex.; Chas. S. Megginson and Mrs.
Susie Middagh, Dustin; B. H. and W. T. Megginson, Calvin, Mrs. Emma Cummings,
Brandon, Texas, and Misses Maud and Nora, of Dustin.
In 1891 his wife died in Morris County, Texas, where he came with his
family from Alabama several years before. A year later he was married to Miss
Rhoda Wilson, of Titus County, Texas. One daughter resulted from this
marriage.
He was a true and devoted husband, a kind, loving and considerate
father and cared well for and devoted his interests to his family. He has sons
and daughters-in-law, several grandchildren and a host of friends who will
miss his many deeds of kindness and are grieved to learn of his death.
He was trustee and assessor of Dustin township and a well known and
influential citizen.
Having waited the arrival of a son and daughter from Texas interment
was not made till Tuesday afternoon at 5 o’clock. A large crowd followed the
remains to their final resting place in the Dustin Cemetery. Funeral and burial
services were conducted by Rev. M. C. Dobbs, pastor M. E. Church. – Dustin
(Okla) Dispatch.
Deceased was a brother of Mr. J. H. Megginson, of Buffalo, R.F.D. No. 2.
