March 1, 1881:

The relatives and friends of Captain and Mrs. J.M. CHENEY are invited to 
attend the funeral of their sister, Miss S.A. CHENEY, at the residence of the 
former, on Hull Street, between Columbus and Randolph, this morning at 10 o'clock.

Mr. James F. ALDRIDGE, an old, influential and highly respected citizen of 
this county, died very suddenly at his home near Jefferson on last Wednesday 
morning, the 23rd… -Linden Reporter

A colored youth about 18 years old, named Ben SHEPPARD, met with a fatal 
accident on Wednesday last, near the burying ground on Mr. A.J. WELLBORN's place, 
a few miles north of this city. He was attending the funeral of his sister's 
child, but had taken his gun along with him, with the intention of trying to 
shoot a rabbit after the funeral… After the funeral he went to the bush to get 
his gun, seizing it by the muzzle and pulling it toward him. In doing so the 
gun fired, lodging the whole load of large squirrel shot in the pit of his 
stomach, and producing his death in ten or fifteen minutes. -Eufaula Bulletin

of S.N. HULGAN.

Died, in McGhee's Bend, Cherokee County, on the 19th ultimo, Mrs. Louisa 
ROBERTS, consort of W.L. ROBERTS.

Died, in Randolph County, last week, Mrs. N. M. GATLIN, formerly of West 
Point, Georgia.
Died, in Randolph County, last week, Mrs. BURTON, mother of Judge T.J. 
BURTON, of Cleburne County.

Died, in Greenville, Zona Maybell LEE, aged six years.

Died, in Hale, Mr. R.A. HIGGINS, aged 56 years; also, Willie BELL, aged 19 
years.

Died, on Sunday, February 20th, in the 35th year of her age, Mary Wilson, 
wife of G. Thomas COX, and eldest daughter of Sarah Chandler and L. M. WILSON, of 
Mobile.


March 3, 1881:

Died, at her residence, near Argo, recently, Mrs. James A. GLENN. Died, at 
her residence, near Argo, on the 15th ultimo, Mrs. J.W. LINDSAY, Jr.

Died, at her residence, at Jonesboro, last Wednesday, Mrs. John J. JENNING.


March 4, 1881:

Mr. Lancelot JOHNSTON died, in the 66th year of his age, in Chilton County, 
on Sunday last, February 27th, and was buried here on Monday in his family 
burying ground. He removed from Madison, Georgia, where he was born about 40 
years ago, and resided here many years and reared a large family of children, who 
with his wife, survive him. -Tuskegee News


March 5, 1881:

Hon. Gilliam JAMES, formerly a representative in the Legislature from Hale 
County in 1878-79, died in that county, of meningitis, on the 28th ultimo.

Died, at the family residence in Shelby County, February 7, 1881, Mrs. Maria 
CHANCELLOR, wife of Williamson CHANCELLOR, aged 56 years. She was the 
daughter of Mrs. Mary BRIDGES, who still survives her, and is in her 93rd year. This 
estimable lady leaves an affectionate husband and eight loving children. She 
was born in Autauga County, and was married in that county and spent almost 
her entire life there and in Coosa County. She had been a member of the 
Baptist Church… Her remains were interred in the cemetery at Childersburg, Talladega 
County…

Died, in Perry County, recently, Nelson GRAY, in his 73rd year.

Died, in Greensboro, 24th ultimo, William Thomas BELL, youngest son of Capt. 
W. A. BELL, aged 19 years, 4 months and 16 days.

Died, on the 24th ultimo, in Shelby County, little Mollie ALLEN, daughter of 
Mr. Shelby ALLEN, aged about nine years.

Died, near Union, Alabama, on Saturday last, Mr. Robert LEE, aged 70 years.
Died, in Greene County, recently, Mr. James B. PIPPIN.


March 6, 1881:

On the first of January 1881, after a protracted illness caused mainly by an 
affection of the brain, at his residence in Elba, Alabama, Dr. Josephus P. 
BLUE departed this life. The doctor was a native of North Carolina, and was born 
on May 30th, 1824, and with his parents emigrated to Pike County, in this 
State, while a schoolboy… He was a graduate of the Charleston, S. C. Medical 
College. He settled near Elba in 1850, and commenced the practice of his 
profession… Married here and reared a large, respectable and interesting family, 
mostly daughters, with a son, J. D. BLUE… (Lengthy article)

As we go to press we are pained to hear of the death of Mr. Henry J. BANKS, 
of Guerryton. He was an excellent gentleman, and one of the best and most 
prosperous citizens in the county. -Union Springs Journal

Died, near Dadeville, on the 26th, Mr. B.H. WAGNER.

Mrs. Susan D. TUCKER died at Collirene last week of heart disease, aged about 
73 years.

Died, in Walker County, recently, Mrs. Louisa PARKER, wife of T.B. PARKER.

Died, in Mobile, March 3rd, H. E. KRUSE, aged 26 years.

The interments in the city cemetery the past week, ending last night, the 
5th, were as follows:

March 8, 1881:

The friends of Mr. John M. BENSON, and of his mother, Mrs. S. R. BENSON, and 
family, are respectfully invited to attend his funeral services at the First 
Baptist Church at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon.

In the death of Mr. John M. BENSON, which occurred at 10 o'clock last night, 
this city loses one of its promising young men. He was born in this city… He 
started in business under most favorable circumstances, but unfortunately a 
few months ago was stricken with illness, which entirely prostrated him mentally 
and physically, from which he never rallied…

Mrs. Walter L. COLEMAN, widow of the late Walter L. COLEMAN, formerly a 
popular mayor of Montgomery, died in this city Sunday, and was buried yesterday 
afternoon, her funeral being held at the Protestant Methodist Church… Already in 
feeble health, she was seized with and prostrated by a paralytic stroke on the 
occasion of the recent accidental shooting of the little son of Mr. STUBBS, 
which hastened her death. Mrs. COLEMAN leaves several children and relatives 
in this city to mourn and regret her death.

Died, at Carrollton, recently, Mr. Bryant G. RICHARDSON. 
Died, near Carrollton, Thursday last, Mr. John COLLINS, found dead in his 
bed.

Died, on the 24th ultimo, at the Hills in Marengo County, Dr. Charles IRBY, 
an old and honored citizen.
Died, near Selma, on the 5th instant, Mrs. A.M. SHACKELFORD, wife of the late 
Major A.G. SHACKELFORD.


March 9, 1881:

Mr. James SULLIVAN, for a long time a resident of Alabama, died in Grimes 
County, Texas, February 26th.

Died, in Franklin County, recently, Mrs. Rhoda McCORD.


March 10, 1881:

Mr. D. DURDEN, an old and respected citizen of Autauga, died at his home in 
Prattville on Monday last.

Mrs. Sarah FORNEY, the venerable mother of Hon. William H. FORNEY, of 
Jacksonville, died at her residence in that place recently, in the 81st year of her 
age. She, with her family, settled in Jacksonville in the fall of 1835.

Died, in Talladega, 4th instant, James F. LINTON, son of Mr. James LINTON, 
aged 18 years.

March 12, 1881:

(New Orleans, March 11) A Vienna (Louisiana) dispatch to the Democrat says 
Charles YASSETT was shot dead yesterday by his stepson, John BOOK.  YASSETT 
ill-treated his wife, when she left him.  He tried to force her return, which 
caused BOOK to shoot him.

The friends and acquaintances of Mr. and Mrs. Ed STAPLES, colored, are 
requested to attend his funeral, this morning at 10 o'clock, at the First Colored 
Baptist Church.

(Hale County) Spencer PRINCE, a colored man of good character, and highly 
respected by the white people who knew him, died in this vicinity of consumption 
on the 3rd.  -Southern Watchman

Died, near Clay Hill, recently, of diphtheria, Fannie, eldest daughter of Eli 
and Malinda DEESE.

Died, in Union Springs, the 8th instant, Mrs. Amanda BAGBY.     
Died, in Bullock County, last Saturday night, Mrs. Cole LOVELESS, aged 70 
years.

Died, at Whiting, Blount County, Mrs. Priscilla NABORS, widow of the late 
Hugh NABORS, aged about 42 years.


March 13, 1881:

The numerous friends of Capt. R.W. GOLDTHWAITE will learn with profound 
sorrow that he departed this life Friday night last, at his late home in Dallas, 
Texas… He was a native of this city, and as generally known, a son of the late 
Senator GOLDTHWAITE, so long and widely known as one of the ablest lawyers and 
most prominent citizens of Alabama…  Captain GOLDTHWAITE served with great 
credit to himself and with honor to the Lost Cause during the whole of the War 
Between the States.  He was a member from its organization of Semple's famous 
battery… After the war he commenced the practice of the law in this city, but 
about eight years since he removed to Dallas… He leaves a widow and four 
children, many relatives and a host of friends to mourn his untimely death.  His 
remains are expected to reach here tomorrow.

Died, in Dadeville, recently, Mrs. E.A. COLLEY, daughter of Reverend T. M. 
LYNCH, deceased, of the Alabama Conference.

Died, in Marion, on the 7th instant, Mr. Robert CARROLL, aged 36 years, from 
the effects of seven wounds received in the battle of Frazer's Farm.

Died, near Six Mile, Bibb County, on the 4th instant, Mrs. E.A. FULTON.

Died, on last Saturday, Mr. Gus ROY, son of Reverend J.M. ROY, of Prattville. 
 Died, in Prattville, on the 10th instant, Mr. W.H. HENDRICKS, son of Mr. 
J.R. HENDRICKS.

Died, at the residence of J. D. PARROT, February 25th, Mrs. Nancy KENNEDY, 
aged 76 years.

The interments in the City Cemetery for the week ending March 12th, were as 
follows:

March 15, 1881:

Died, near Roanoke, on the 7th instant, Mrs. Martha ARNETT, wife of Mr. Jesse 
ARNETT.
Died, in Fulton County, Georgia, recently, Mr. William M. PERRYMAN, formerly 
of Randolph County.

Died, in Browneville, Lee County, the 11th instant, Mrs. Sarah PAGE.
Died, in Selma, on the 7th instant, Mrs. A.B. TOURNIER.


March 16, 1881:

The Oxford Tribune comes to us in mourning for the death of Dr. Stephen C. 
WILLIAMS, for more than 30 years a prominent and highly honored citizen of 
Calhoun County.

Died, near Centre, Cherokee County, last week, Mrs. Ella Jane BROOKS, aged 
20.

Died, in Colbert County, Tuesday of last week, Miss Lucinda WALLIS.


March 17, 1881:

(Louisville, March 16) Col. G. HODGES, aged 79 years, died here today.  He 
was one of the oldest editors and Masons in the South.

(St. Louis, March 16) A special dispatch from Kansas City says Thomas GORDON, 
the desperado who killed the city marshal of Socorro, N. M., a few days ago, 
but who escaped and fled to Albuquerque, was arrested there, and on Friday 
last taken back to Socorro, where he was hanged to a water tank by a mob…

Mrs. Mary A. WYMAN died at the residence of her son-in-law, Dr. J.F. 
JOHNSTON, in this city, about four o'clock yesterday morning… Mrs. WYMAN was one of 
the earliest settlers in Montgomery, coming here, as she did, with her honored 
husband, Mr. Justus WYMAN, who died many years ago, when the place was 
comparatively a village…

Died, near Eufaula, on Monday last, Mr. Winslow T. HOWE, formerly proprietor 
of the telegraph line, up to 1865, between Columbus and Apalachicola.

In Mobile, on Sunday last, Mr. A.C. HENGUEINN was found dead in his bed.


March 18, 1881:

The friends and acquaintances of Mr. and Mrs. H. GONZALEZ are invited to 
attend the funeral of the latter at the Catholic Church at 10 o'clock this 
morning.

Mr. Peter GONZALES, a native of Pensacola, died in that city on Saturday 
last, aged 71 years.  He was one of the oldest and most esteemed citizens.  Six 
sons of the patriarch officiated as pallbearers at the obsequies.


March 20, 1881:

A difficulty occurred in Georgetown, Georgia, last Sunday evening between two 
colored men, Mose SEEBLES and Linsey LAW, in which the latter killed the 
former with his pocket knife…  -Eufaula Times

An inquest was held over the body of Alfred ROBERTSON, near Fortune's Ferry, 
March 15th.  It was discovered five miles from where he was drowned. - Selma 
Argus

(Lowndes County) Mrs. Mary E. RUDULPH died last Sunday morning, the 13th, at 
the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.F. CLEMENTS, after an illness of many years.  
Mrs. RUDULPH was born in Newbern District, South Carolina in July 1815, and 
in 1835 married Dr. B. B. RUDULPH, of that state.  In 1836 they moved to 
Alabama and settled in what is known as the Ash Creek neighborhood, in this county, 
and where her remains were interred Monday.  She had several children, but 
only two survive her, Mrs. J.F. CLEMENTS, of this place, and Mr. J. Murray 
RUDULPH, of Gordonsville. -Examiner

Died, at Scottsville, Bibb County, on the 12th instant, Mr. J.L. WAGGONER, 
aged 85 years.

Died, near Nicholson's store, in Choctaw County, March 8th, Mrs. I.C. 
HARWELL, aged 36 years.

Died, Gertrude, a little eight-year-old daughter of B. D. and Hannah CRUM, 
near Farmersville recently.
Died, at Mount Willing, Lowndes County, the 12th, Mrs. COLEMAN.

Died, in Selma, 13th instant, Mrs. S.J. THOMAS, aged 46 years.  She leaves 
four children to mourn her loss.


March 22, 1881:

(New Orleans, March 20) John RUSSELL, while intoxicated, fell from the 
gallery of the Exposition Hall today and was instantly killed.

Captain George S. DAVIDSON, who claims as first Lieutenant of Latham's 
Battery, to have fired the first gun at Manassas, died near Estillville, Tennessee, 
the 13th.

Died, at Ozark, the 14th, Mr. Green B. WHALEY.
Died, at Geneva, recently, Mr. David NEWTON.

Died, at Newton, Exa Lee, infant daughter of John and Susan C. BARTLETT.

Died, near Louina, Randolph County, "Uncle John LILES", between 90 and 100 
years of age.

Died, in Huntsville, recently, Mrs. Annie H., wife of Capt. James H. BONE.

Died, near Anniston, 3rd instant, Waldron N. SMITH, aged 24 years.

Died, at Whitehall, near Orion, recently, Mr. Jesse D.W. WADSWORTH, in his 
52nd year.


March 25, 1881:

Mr. C.H. CRAM, a brother of Mr. Daniel H. CRAM, of this city, was shot at and 
killed at his residence on the outskirts of the city of Chicago, on the night 
of the 21st.  

Died, on the 13th, in Butler County, Mrs. Martha N. MARTIN, widow of the late 
Mr. G.W. MARTIN.


Died, in Hurtville, Russell County, Miss Fannie, daughter of Dr. C.D. HURT, 
aged 17 years.


March 26, 1881:

Died, in Evergreen, the 18th instant, Mrs. Sophronia CHRISTIAN. Died, in 
Brooklyn, Conecuh County, last week, W.A. McCREARY.

Died, near Sand Tuck, in Elmore County, last Sunday evening, Mr. Walter 
RAWLS.

Died, in Mooresville, on the 17th, Mordecai OLIVER, aged 84 years.


March 27, 1881:

Wilby ALFORD was shot and killed by William TAYLOR, at Marshall, Texas, the 
25th.

Died, near Clutsville, Madison County, on the 21st instant, Mrs. Mary A. 
LOVE, in the 73rd year of her age.

Died, in De Soto Parish, Louisiana, recently, Mrs. S. P. LUTHERLIN, formerly 
of Autauga County.

Died, on the 21st instant, near Alexander City, Dr. R. E. JORDAN.

Died, at Columbiana, on Monday night last, the 21st instant, Mr. Isaac WOODS, 
aged about 70 years.


March 29, 1881:

Last Thursday, about 6 o'clock, a southbound train knocked Mr. McLEOD from 
the track near Hartley's old mill, about four miles above this place… When 
brought to the city he was not dead, but badly bruised.  He died about 10 o'clock 
that night. -Greenville Echo

The storm last Friday night spent its fury in many localities in this section…
 About midway between Milltown and Roanoke, a house occupied by Jack EMORY, 
four in the family, was completely demolished, killing the entire family.  This 
unfortunate family was all buried in one grave, on last Saturday, at High 
Pine Church (Lengthy article on storm damage). -LaFayette Sun

At High Shoals, eight miles northeast of Roanoke, on Friday night there was a 
destructive cyclone.  Mr. Jack EMBREY with his family of a wife and two 
children, unfortunately reside in the line pursued by the tornado.  His house, 
recently built of plank on the "box style", was totally destroyed and all were 
killed. -Randolph County News

Died, near Gainesville, on the 14th instant, Mrs. JOINER, wife of Mr. O. R. 
JOINER, aged 59 years.

Died, at Orion, Thursday last, Mr. C.A. DENNIS.
Died, near Decatur, last week, Mr. Neil THOMPSON, in his 71st year.

Died, in Selma, on the 24th instant, Mr. R. P. LAWLEY.
Died, near McKinley, Marengo County, the 18th instant, Mr. William SIMMONS.

Died, at Thurman, Randolph County, on the 16th instant, Mrs. N. T. 
EICHELBERGER, wife of Mr. C.W. EICHELBERGER.
Died, near Wedowee, last week, Mr. T.P. GREEN.

Died, at Coffeytown, Jackson County, last week, Mrs. A.J. GRANTHAM.
Died, in Dale County, recently, Mr. F. M. CHESHIRE.

Died, near McKnight's post office, Chambers County, Mr. J.C. LOOSER, aged 82 
years.
Died, at Milltown, last week, Mrs. John B. SLAY.


March 30, 1881:

Mr. A.M. McLENDON, of this city, received a dispatch yesterday, from 
Rockdale, Texas, announcing the sad intelligence that his father, Mr. John G. 
McLENDON, who removed to Texas a little over one year ago, was dying.  He is about 78 
years old. -Eufaula Bulletin

Both of the twins of Mr. Bunyan DAVIS, born recently, have died within the 
past week.  His wife is still very ill. -Clayton Courier

Died, in Selma, on Sunday, Mr. Washington PRUETT.
Died, near Danville, Morgan County, on the 21st, Mrs. LEHMAN, wife of Jos. 
LEHMAN.

Died, in Mobile, recently, Mr. R.H. GOODLOE.
Died, in Florence, on the 24th, Mrs. Mary J. HUDSON, aged 56 years.


March 31, 1881:

Died, at the Exchange Hotel, Montgomery, Alabama, March 30th, Elizabeth, 
infant daughter of William Dudley and Bettie CHIPLEY.  The body will be taken this 
Thursday morning to Columbus, Georgia for interment.  

Died, at Tompkinsville, Butler County, on the 15th instant, Mathew J. TOOMEY.
Died, in Morgan County, last Monday, Mrs. Joseph LEMON.

Died, in Pickens County, on the 21st, Mrs. Kate KIRKLAND.
Dr. Jesse P. PUGH, formerly of Clarke County, died in Wortham, Texas, 
recently,

Died, at Valley Head, on Wednesday, Dr. B.F. PAINE, aged about 45 years.
Died, near Bethlehem Church, Sallie, wife of D.W. BROWN, aged 21.

Died, in Birmingham, on the 24th instant, Mrs. W.J. BUSH.
Died, on Lookout Mountain, on Wednesday morning, Mrs. Margaret TINKER, aged 
80 years.
