Joseph Lamar Lanier, Sr.
  Joseph Lamar Lanier, Sr., 94, died Tuesday at Lanwood in Lanett, Ala.
  Mr. Lanier, born February 12, 1906, in Jackson, was the son of the late 
George H. and Marie Lamar Lanier. He was a graduate of West Point High School 
and a 1927 graduate of Washington and Lee University. He also attended the 
Lowell Textile Institutes.
  Mr. Lamier was president of West Point Manufacturing Company in 1951 until 
1965 and then was chairman of the board and chief executive officer of West 
Point Pepperell Manufacturing Company from 1965 until his retirement in 1971. 
He was also on the board of directors of many companies including: The 
Southern Company, Liberty National Life Insurance Company and First National 
Bank of Atlanta. He was on the Board of Trustees of Washington and Lee 
University, emeritus, Walter F. George School of Law Foundation, LaGrange 
College, Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, emeritus, County-Valley Library 
Foundation and Business Council of the United States, emeritus.
  Mr. Lanier was active in community affairs including the George H. Lanier 
Boy Scout Council, the Americsan Red  Cross, George H. Lanier Memorial 
Hospital and Nursing Home and Junior Achievement.
  Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lura and Edward W. Edge of 
LaGrange and Ann and Thomas W. Pearce of Birmingham; a son, Joseph L. Lanier, 
Jr.; a brother, Bruce N. Lanier of Lanett, Ala.; six grandchildren and six 
great-grandchildren. He was pececeded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lura 
Fowlkes Lanier.
  A private geaveside service was held Tuesday in Marseilles Cemetery in West 
Point.
  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the H. Grady Bradshaw 
Library, 3419 20th Ave., Valley, Ala. 36854 or to a favorite charity.
  McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point was in charge of arrangements.
