ELIZABETH HICKS, COLORED, 117 YEARS, DIES AT LANGDALE

Elizabeth Hicks, a negrees age 117 years, died at her home near Langdale last Saturday. She was 
buried at Cusseta Sunday by Johnson & Company, undertakers, of Langdale.

The aged colored woman was born a slave on a plantation near Mobile. Her name was the same as 
that of her master, and she was the daugter of Uncle Peter Stephens, who was brought from another 
plantation and retained the name of his former master. 

Aunt Lizzie was born in 1812 and came to this section nearly one hundred years ago. She lived 
with her youngest sin, L. M. Hicks, at the time of her death. The son is now 72 years old. 
Several older children survive her.

When about 18 years old, Aunt Lizzie was sold to Mr. Peter Fredericks at Union Springs, Alabama, 
who owned her until the emancipation. SInce 1865 she had lived until recent years near Cusseta, 
coming to Langdale to live with her youngest son. She was highly respected and loved by her 
'white folks' and these join with her children, her great grandchildren and great great 
grandchildren in morning her passing.
