Everett S. Dean, 95, of Caldwell, and formerly of Indiana, died Tuesday, 
October 26, 1993, at a Caldwell care center of natural causes. Funeral services 
will be held on Monday, November 1, 1993, in Salem, Indiana. Local arrangements 
are under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.
Everett was born March 18, 1898, near Salem, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana 
University in 1921, with a M. S. in 1938.
He began his coaching career in 1921 at Carleton College, Northfield, MN, as 
basketball and baseball coach. From 1925-38, he coached the two sports at 
Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and from 1939 to 1951, he was 
basketball coach at Stanford University CA., and was baseball coach there from 
1950 to 1955, when he retired from coaching.
His coaching career was a successful one, with more than a few championship 
teams, culminating in the NCAA basketball championship in 1942 with his 
Stanford team. Many honors came his way, through his career, and he served in 
national associations. He served his country with special assignments; in Rome 
with the U. S. Army athletic program during 1945; with the U.S. State 
Department in Uruguay in 1958, coaching their national team; and with the U.S. 
Attorney General's office, studying the crime element in sports.
His book, Progressive Basketball, written in 1942, enjoyed seven printings and 
was translated into Spanish.
He was a dedicated coach, teaching young men the development of sportsmanship, 
leadership, citizenship, loyalty and the winning spirit.
During his retirement in Southern Indiana with his wife, Lena, he farmed and in 
1966, they were instrumental in the building of a county museum and 
genealogical library. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Salem, 
Indiana.
His wife preceded him in death in 1985. Survivors are his two daughters, Mrs. 
Carolyn Carlyle and son-in-law, Dr. Robert J. Carlyle of Charlotte, N.C.; and 
Nancy Baxter of Caldwell; 5 grandchildren, Tom and wife, Jane, of Caldwell, 
Barbara of Ketchum, Jane Gardner of Nampa, Martha and Steve Subia of Caldwell, 
and Louise and Cory Russell of Nampa; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Since April, 1991, he had made his home with his daughter, Nancy, until his 
death.
