JOHN SANZENBACHER
Among the Oldest and Best Known Residents of Canfield
John Sanzenbacher is a man of quiet, social, and agreeable manners, and enjoys
the esteem and confidence of the people of this community. He is a
progressive, public-spirited citizen.
Mr. Sanzenbacher was born in the Kingdom of Wurtemberg, Germany, May 5, 1827,
and is, therefore, a little more than 75 years of age (sic should be 92 years
of age). He emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1833 and lived
near Unity, Columbiana county, until 1836, when the family removed to Lawrence
county, Pa. His boyhood days were spent on a farm until 1844 when he was bound
out to R. Fullerton for three and a half years to learn the trade of tannin
and currying. After serving his apprenticeship he came to Mahoning county and
worked in what were then considered large tanneries. On April 9, 1850, he came
to Canfield to take charge of a tannery he purchased of F. A. Brainerd. Dec.
24, 1850, he was married to Miss Sarah Oswald of Canfield township. Six
children were born to them. Mrs. Sanzenbacher died a few years since.
During the war Mr. Sanzenbacher was associated with the late Pierpont Edwards
in the grocery and drug trade and with F. Krehl of Girard in the tanning
business. In 1867 he sold out these interests and purchased a fine farm one
mile east of the village. But a couple of years later he again engaged in
tanning wand with P. Edwards as a partner engaged extensively in the
manufacture of leather belting. A mammoth building was erected near the
railroad and for years a large force of workmen were employed.
