FIRED FATAL SHOT
After Months of Suffering From Ill Health D.L. Sanzenbacher’s Mind Weakened
and He Used a Revolver.
This community was greatly shocked Monday afternoon when it was learned that
David L. Sanzenbacher had shot himself.
Mr. Sanzenbacher resided on the farm where he was born, one mile east of the
village. For a number of years he had not been in good health and for several
months past was quite despondent. He complained of a severe pain in the back
of his head which he told his wife he feared would drive him insane. He also
suffered from other physical ailments.
Monday he was about his farm work as usual, his condition apparently no worse
than it had been. In the afternoon he remarked to his hired man about the
cold and discouraging weather for farmers, but gave no intimation that he
contemplated suicide.
Shortly after 3 o’clock Mr. Sanzenbacher’s little son had occasion to visit a
tool house located in the yard only a few rods from the residence. When he
opened the door he was startled and horrified to see his father lying on the
floor, his face covered in blood. He hastened to report what he had seen and
Dr. W.D. Coy was immediately summoned. Examination showed, however, that
nothing could be done to save the man’s life. He had shot himself in the
center of the forehead, using a Red Jacket rim-fire revolver, in which there
had been three cartridges, only one of which had been exploded. He was
carried into the house and death resulted within two hours after the act was
committed, consciousness never returning.
Mr. Sanzenbacher was the third son of John and Sarah A. Sanzenbacher, and was
born in Canfield Nov. 11, 1869 consequently in the thirty-eighth year of his
age. He was educated in the public schools and for several years was engaged
with his father in the manufacture of leather. Farming suited him better than
manufacturing, however, and he made a great success of his work, his farm
being one of the best kept and most productive in the county. He had acquired
a competency so that financial troubles could have nothing to do with
disturbing his mental condition.
On Jan. 7, 1891, he was married to Miss Sarah A. Corll of Canfield, who, with
two sons, Gilson and Otto, survives him. He also leaves his aged father, two
sisters and three brothers – Mrs. J.E. Neff, Mrs. I Callahan, Charles and
Luther of Canfield and John of Youngstown.
Mr. Sanzenbacher was an active member and officer of Zion Reformed church, a
member of the township board of education and affiliated with Western Star,
Youngstown, Masonic lodge.
Funeral services, held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock,
were conducted by Rev. J.C. Schaaf and were largely attended. The remains
were placed in the family vault in the village cemetery.
