INSTANTLY KILLED
Harry Noll Loses His Life Monday Afternoon
Harry Noll, an employee at the works of William Tod & Co., was instantly
killed at 1:30 p.m. Monday. He was engaged with Charles Heaton in breaking
castings just west of the foundry. A team of mules was employed to pull the
weight up and after reaching the top of the derrick, a bar was used to hold
the rope until the team was unhitched and driven away, when the ball was
allowed to drop. Mr. Heaton was hooking the bar and the team had been taken to
one side when the bar slipped and began whirling around with lightning
rapidity. Mr. Noll, not realizing his danger, was standing close enough to be
struck, was thrown, on his knees, and with the next turn the bar struck him on
the head, breaking his skull and exposing the brain. He was carried into the
pattern shop in an unconscious condition and Dr. Buechner summoned. Upon the
arrival of the physician he had ceased breathing, and the faint flutter of the
heart soon stopped. Upon examining him in addition to the terrible gash in his
head, which was closed by the surgeon, his right arm was found broken at the
wrist. The remains were taken in charge by Undertaker Wendler and prepared for
burial. The deceased had been employed at the works for the past eighteen
months learning the trade of machinist but for a day or two had been engaged
at the work which cost him his life. He was 18 years old and brother of Wm.
and George Noll, of East Federal street, and Mrs. Thos. Gilchrist, of Grant
street. He was highly esteemed by his fellow employees and the tears came
unbidden as they gazed upon his lifeless form after the accident. Mr. Heaton
who was with the deceased when the accident occurred risked his life in the
effort to save Mr. Noll, holding the bar until by the force he was hurled to
the ground. The entire establishment closed this afternoon for the day as soon
as the accident occurred. Coroner Hawn was called, but learning the facts
decided and inquest was unnecessary.

Terrible Death of Young Noll.

1:30 Monday afternoon. He was engaged in breaking castings by dropping of a
heavy weight. A bar was used to hold the weight until nearly ready to fall.
The bar, held by a man, slipped from his grasp, and it flew around with great
rapidity, Noll, not realizing his danger, stood too close, and the first
revolution knocked him to his knees, the next revolution striking him on the
left temple and crushing his skull so as to expose the brain. Noll was 18
