COMMENT
As told, in 2003, to Jennifer L. Neff by her father, Robert Neff
[Jennifer and Robert are John Naff/Neff descendants]
John Naff/Neff was born on 2 June 1796 in Northampton Co. [now Lehigh Co.] PA –
known as the Heidelberg area and located about 15 miles NW of Allentown. His
parents were Conrad and Magdalena Weaver/Weber Naff/Neff.
Stress over the impending Civil War is believed to be the cause of John Neff’s
relatively early death on 7 Apr 1861. He was just 64y 10m 5d. He greatly
feared a war that would sever the United States and prayed for a peaceful
resolution. Many of his neighbors were in favor of the war and this created
much local tension. John’s fears were realized when the South seceded from the
Union. The Civil War officially began just five days after his death. On 12
Apr 1861 Confederates fired on Ft. Sumter.
