Howard Borts Thrown From Auto Sustained Injuries Which Caused Death
NEPHEW ESCAPES INJURY
Truck Left Road and Crashed Through Fence Near Niles Yesterday
Howard Borts, aged 36 years and a resident of Warren for the past twenty five
years, is dead as a result of an accident which occurred on the River Road a
mile west of Niles, near St. Stephen’s cemetery on Sunday morning at 11:30.
Borts was returning from Niles with his nephew, Thomas Finch, who was driving
the car, when it struck a rut in the road, a tire was torn from the left front
wheel, and the car was pitched forward crashing through a fence. Borts was
thrown from the car with a terrible force. In the fall a piece of fence board
penetrated his right leg, tearing the leg in a frightful manner, and passing
through the thigh. His left leg was also crushed below the knee, when he
landed under the front part of the truck. Finch was thrown clear of the wreck
and escaped any serious injury, but was completely overcome by the shock and
was taken to his home on Homewood avenue in Warren by men who came by just
after the accident occurred. Borts was rushed to the Warren City Hospital in
Holloway’s ambulance and he was immediately taken to the operating room where
the leg was amputated. He died before he could be removed from the operating
room. Death was due to the loss of blood which he suffered when the leg was
torn by the piece of fence board. The body was removed to the undertaking
rooms of W.J. White, on North Park avenue, where it will remain until Tuesday
evening when it will be taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. George Foos, 808
Terra Alta avenue. Funeral services will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Foos, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, when Captain Rickard, of the Salvation
Army will officiate. Burial will be made in Oakwood cemetery. Mr. Borts was
born in Ohltown, on February 14, 1886, and received his education in the
Ohltown school. He came to Warren when a boy, and has been well known to many
friends here, who regret very much to learn of his tragic death. For the past
year he had been employed by the Frank George Construction Co. on the Red Run
sewer, and resided with his niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Finch, 613
South Homewood avenue. He was a member of the Salvation Army, and of the
Eagles Lodge, and is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Harlan, Mrs.
George Foos, and two brothers, Charles and Seymour Borts, all of Warren
