Our Mountain Home
The funeral services were held on Tuesday at Horse Creek church near Ironaton for
Robert Atkisson, 24, farm, youth, who drowned Monday in "wash hole" at Ironaton.
Atkisson apparently suffered an attack of cramps and was unable to swim,
according to Cecil Moore, 22, who was the only other person at the place when the
tragedy occurred. Moore said he made an effort to save Atkisson, but "gave out"
before he reached the bank and found it necessary to release his hold on his
companion in order to reach the bank safely himself. The wash hole is an
abandoned ore pit which apparently is fed by a spring. It had been used by boys
and young men of the community for swimming. Atkisson is survived by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Atkisson of Munford and several brothers and sisters.
