Mrs. Harriet Shults Answered the final Summons Yesterday.

              ~~~~~~~~~~~
      At the residence of Mrs George T. Scranton yesterday morning at 11 o'clock
occurred the death of Mrs. Scranton's mother, Mrs. Harriet C. Shults. The deceased
was over 81 years of age and had been ill for about six weeks when final summons
came.
      Mrs. Shults was born near Utica, N. Y., March 14, 1824. She was marred to
Elijah Shults and for a number of years resided in Ohio where seven children came to
bless the union. In 1859 Mr. and Mrs. Shults removed to Emporia, Kan., where one
more child was born. In September 1860 Mr. Shults died. His wife continued to reside
in Emporia until 1871 when she removed to Liberty and resided with her sons at that
place. In 1885 she came to Independence and made her home with her only daughter,
Mrs. George T. Scranton, where she has resided until death.
    About six weeks ago the old lady was taken ill with complication of diseases
which at her advanced age made recovery impossible. She passed quietly away Sunday
morning surrounded by members of her family. Conscious to the very last she calmly
bade her family goodbye, and, sustained by her faith that had been her steadfast
companion throughout her life she laid down the burden of years and fell asleep.
      Mrs. Shults leaves four children, Mrs. Geo. T. Scranton and John Shults of
this city and Elijah an Scott Shults of Liberty, Dr W.W. Flora of Colorado Springs
been a tot of three years until he had reached early manhood.
      Mrs. Shults had all her life been a member of the Methodist church and funeral
services will be held tomorrow at 2 p. m. from the First M. E. church, Rev. Smith
officiating."
