East Liverpool Crisis 9 March 1894
After months of bodily suffering throughout all of which the pure, untarnished
soul shone brightly, Mrs. Elizabeth Ikirt passed from this life triumphantly
into the next at 12:20 today, surrounded by friends and kinsfolk.
The end was peaceful, calm, and happy. She went out into the other
world conscious to the very last, fearlessly and gladly.
For the past few days Mrs. Dr. Ikirt has been slowly sinking. She has
for the past two years been an invalid, resulting from the grip. She has since
last summer gradually declined, and laid ill for the past several months. She
was prostrated only last Saturday and absent relatives were quickly sent for.
Her son, Congressman George P. Ikirt, returned home Monday, as before
mentioned, and has since been at her bedside.
Mrs. Dr. J.J. Ikirt was born back in Columbiana county, near Elkton,
February 4, 1824, and is therefore about a month past the seventieth
anniversary of her birth. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Fife, and she was a
daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Fife – one of the oldest families in that
region. Her mother was a Hamilton – also one of the old Scotch-Irish families
who settled near Chartiers, Pa., early in the history of the county. Mrs.
Ikirt’s father was a soldier in the war of 1812, and shortly after came to
Columbiana county and married. Elizabeth was the only daughter in a family of
five. Two brothers, John and Isaac Fife, survive her, and are still residents
of the county.
Deceased married Dr. J.J. Ikirt on 5th of February 1851, and four
children were fruits of the union – George P. Ikirt, Mrs. A.H. Clark, and Mrs.
Mary Crow, all of this city, and another daughter who died at the age of
eighteen months. Mr. and Mrs. Ikirt lived most of their lives in Madison
township near West Point, coming to this city in ’75.
At the age of eight years Mrs. Ikirt found her Lord, and she has since
been a faithful member of the Presbyterian church. Her husband, Dr. J.J. Ikirt,
survives her. She was a faithful wife and mother, and was devoted to her home.
In character she was quiet, but steadfast, and her disposition made her beloved
by all who knew her. Last night Mrs. Ikirt called all her kin, including her
children and grandchildren, and gave to all a parting admonition.
	The funeral occurs at 2 p.m. Sunday from the home, on Sixth street;
interment at Riverview
