East Liverpool Crisis 31 May 1897 pg 8
James Hambel, a well known farmer of St. Clair township, was found dead at his
home, two miles northeast of Calcutta, Saturday afternoon about 2 o’clock.
Hambel was a bachelor, about 56 years of age, and owned a small farm
which he worked, living alone. L.F. Farmer, a neighbor, on Saturday going to
see Hambel on a matter of business, found the door locked; and, being unable to
make himself heard, looked through a window and discovered deceased lying
motionless across a bed on his face.
Other neighbors were notified, and a door was forced open. From
indications death had occurred more than 24 hours previous. Hambel had not been
seen since Thursday evening, at which time, however, he appeared to be in his
usual health.
Squire J.N. Rose, of this city, who had been delivering a Memorial
address at Fredericktown, was sent for to hold an inquest. It is probable that
a post mortem examination will be held. It is believed, however, that death was
the result of heart disease. There was no appearance of violence.
Hambel had been an almost life-long resident of St. Clair township. He
was brother in law of Mrs. John Hambel (nee Smith), of this city, and beside
John – who is in business in Pittsburgh – deceased had also a brother, Samuel,
living in Kansas. Deceased was well known in this city.
