East Liverpool Crisis 23 Feb 1897 pg 8
At her home, at Fifth and Jefferson streets, where she had lived for years in
the bosom of her family, Mrs. Lizzie Darrah, widow of George Darrah, passed
from this life at 11:50 a.m. Sunday. She would have been aged 74 years on the
13th of next March, had she lived.
Mrs. Darrah lived to see the development of the city of East Liverpool
from a dirty, uninteresting hamlet. She saw a half century of the progress of
the struggling community. She was one of the colony of Pittsburghers who came
here in 1848 at the time the Blakelies made their first venture in potting in
this city. Only one of that colony is left on her death – Mrs. Patrick McNicol,
who still lives in this city.
Deceased was born in the south of Ireland in 1823. With her parents,
she came to this country at an early age. First residing in New York, the
family later migrated west to the frontier part of Pittsburgh, where the
deceased married, she and her husband removing to this city immediately. Twenty
five years ago, George Darrah was killed in an accident in a claybank, and
since then the widow has resided with her children – a number of whom still
live at the family home on Fifth street. Seven children are living – Mrs.
George McNicol, Mrs. Annie Campbell, Miss Lena Darrah, and John, Will, Jere and
George. All live in the city and the family were all gathered at the bedside
when the end came.
Mrs. Darrah has been failing for two years. The last illness dated only
from last Thursday. She was a life long and consistent member of the Roman
Catholic church.
The funeral will occur at 9 a.m. Wednesday from St. Aloysius church.
Rev. Bell, of Salineville, and Rev. Halligan, of Wellsville, will assist Father
Smyth in the service.
