East Liverpool Daily Crisis - 13 Mar 1902 - pg 5
John Peter Hommel, aged 92, died Wednesday afternoon about 4 o’clock, at his
home on Main Street, below Fifteenth, after an illness of about six weeks,
having contracted grip fever. He was one of the oldest men living in
Wellsville, and was born May 28, 1809, in Saxe Meiningen, Germany. In 1832 he
wedded Miss Margaret Fritz, a native of Saxe Meiningen, who died 18 years ago.
The deceased emigrated to America, settling in Pittsburgh, PA in 1846. There he
plied the vocation of a tailor for many years and had many old acquaintances in
Pittsburgh. He came to Wellsville in 1868, but for several years has lived in
retirement.
Five children survive. They are: Mrs. Katherine Barger, Mrs. Margaret
Shintelm, Webster, PA; George Hommel, Pittsburgh; Ferdinand Hommel, Ohio Pyle,
PA, and Miss Mary Hommel, Wellsville.
Mr. Hommel was a member of the St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran church, East
Liverpool, and the funeral will be conducted by Rev. J.G. Reinartz from the
residence at 2 pm Saturday, the interment being in Spring Hill cemetery.
