East Liverpool Daily Crisis - 2 Sep 1901 - pg 4
James Finley, aged 71 years, died at his home, 226 East Alley, on Saturday 
evening at 8:40.
Mr. Finley has been in poor health for some time past and a few weeks ago fell 
down a flight of stairs and sustained injuries, which perhaps hastened death, 
but the real cause was old age.
Mr. Finley was a highly respected citizen and has been prominent in city 
affairs since his residence in East Liverpool.
He was born in Washington County, PA, December 3, 1830, and with his father 
went to Hancock County, WVA when four months old. From 1849 to 1851 he taught 
school in Hancock County.
He enlisted in Company K, Third Ohio Volunteer infantry for three years during 
the war. His regiment was discharged from service September 1864, their time 
having expired, he was transferred to 33rd Ohio, where he remained until his 
time expired and he was discharged from the service in September 1864 and 
returned to his home in Hancock County and remained there until January 1865, 
when he enlisted as a recruit in Co A, 115th Ohio regiment remaining in the 
regiment a short time. His time expired and he was mustered out of service and 
transferred to the 118th Ohio, where he remained until the close of the war.
In 1866 he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah W. Guthrie of Beaver County, 
PA, and took up his residence in Hancock, WVA. In the fall of 1881 he with his 
family came to this city where he has since made his home
 Ever since coming to East Liverpool he has been interested in all street work 
and for several years was street commissioner. He was a member of Gen. Lyon 
Post No. 44, G.A.R.
Mr. Finley leaves a wife, two sons and one daughter. Mr. L.B. Finley of 
Sharpsburg, PA, Mrs. William Pittinger and John E. Finley of East Liverpool.
The remains may be viewed at the home on Monday evening from 8 until 10 o’clock.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock and will be in 
charge of the G.A.R. and the Sons of Veterans. Rev. J.C. Taggart, pastor of the 
First United Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Mr. Finley has been a member 
of the church for a number of years. 
The interment will made at Riverview Cemetery.
