East Liverpool Crisis 9 June 1898
Mr. George Anderson who has long been known as one of the pioneer residents of
Liverpool township and East Liverpool passed away at 7:30 o’clock this morning
at the home of his son, John Anderson, on Broadway.
Deceased was 84 years old and succumbed to the infirmities of old age.
He was able to walk about yesterday morning, but about noon became very weak
and rapidly sank until the end came this morning.
Mr. Anderson had been a resident of this locality for the past fifty
years. He was born in Washington County, Pa. When he was quite young his father
died and he went to Virginia to live with an uncle. While still a young man, he
came to East Liverpool and worked at the carpenter trade, assisting in building
many of the older residences of this city.
About the year 1835 he was married to Miss Isabelle Fawcett, daughter
of Joseph Fawcett, then of this city. Her grandfather, Thomas Fawcett, was the
first settler of this city. He located the town about the year 1799 and for
many years it bore the name of Fawcettstown in his honor.
After Mr. Anderson’s marriage he again moved to Pennsylvania. He lived
there for ten years, and then returned to this vicinity and took up his
residence on a farm which he purchased one mile north of town, adjoining what
is now Riverview cemetery.
He remained on the farm until after the death of his wife, which
occurred in 1893, and then came to this city and has since lived with his son,
John, on Broadway.
During his lifetime Mr. Anderson held a number of township offices,
being trustee for several years. He was also one of the organizers of the U.P.
church, of this city, and assisted in erecting the first building occupied by
that denomination, and also the present church building. He occupied the
position of trustee from the time of organization until his death.
Deceased leaves three sons and one daughter – John and Matthew, who are
both married and residents of this city; Joseph, who lives in Colorado, and
Elizabeth Anderson, who lives with her brother John in this city.
