"DR. H. M. FOLKES DEAD IN BILOXI"

"Biloxi, Miss., May 1 - Dr. Hyman Macmakins Folkes, of Bilox, died at his home here
this afternoon at 6 o'clock following an illness of three and one half hours. Death
was caused from apoplexy. Dr. Folkes, who has been a resident of Biloxi thirty
years, having come here from Jackson, was born in Bovina, Miss., October 6, 1872.
For a number of years he practiced medicine in Biloxi but retired several years ago,
and only recently resumed practice as a consulting physician. He at one time was
connected with the state board of health and was instrumental in the establishment
and upkeep of the Biloxi city hospital. Dr. Folkes was regarded as one of Biloxi's
most influental citizens having taken a leading part in undertakings for the
development and upbuilding of the city. He was one of the founders of the First
National bank of which institution he was vice president at the time of his death.
He was also president and general manager of the Biloxi Artesian Ice Manufacturing
Company. He is survived by a wife, two daughters, Miss Josephine and Anna Folkes, of
Biloxi; one brother, Albert Folkes, of Ft. Myers, Fla.; four sisters, Mrs. William
Mallett and Mrs. Alexander Hamilton, Jackson, Miss.; Mrs. R. H. Goff, Monterey,
Cal.; and Miss Frances Folkes, Savannah, Ga."

Additional Comments:
Hyman was born on October 6, 1871.  He was the son of Albert Augustus Folkes
(1839-1903) and Anna Hilzheim (1850-1895).
