 Dorothy Parrish Akins, 91, of Nashville died November 11, 2013, at Langdale 
Hospice House.
 She was born August 9, 1922, in Nashville to the late Shellie W. and Lena 
Taylor Parrish. She graduated from Nashville High School in 1939 as class 
valedictorian. She was an ABAC graduate where she was on the debate team and 
voted “Most Intellectual.” She attended the University of GA where she was 
elected president of “Phi Upsilon Omicron Chi Chapter,” a national Honorary 
Society. She graduated from Valdosta with a degree in education.
 She married John T. “Pete” Atkins in 1942, and they reared their family on the 
Centennial Akins-Parrish Farm in the New Lois Community, south of Nashville, 
where she was a homemaker and neighbor to all for all for almost 70 years. She 
taught school for over 25 years in Berrien County influencing children and 
passing on to them her desire for learning. She was a member of Community United 
Methodist Church where she served in many capacities over the years, the Pine 
Needle Sewing Club, New Lois Community Club and Berrien County Retired Teachers 
Association. She was surely a member of “the Greatest Generation.”
 She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John T. “Pete” Akins, and 
infant sisters, Sarah Nell, Martha June, and one unnamed.
 She is survived by her children, John P. Akins of Tifton, Derene Akins of 
Memphis, TN, Phillip (Joyce) Akins of Nashville, Joy (Dickie) Dowdy of Cordele, 
Amanda (Danny) Daniel of Athens and Brion (Susan) Akins of Nashville, 
grandchildren, Lisa Akins Johnson and John P. Akins, Jr. of Arkansas, Carter 
Akins of Brunswick, Laura Akins of Nashville, Rich Dowdy of Tarpon Springs, FL, 
Rob Dowdy of Cordele, Shellie Dowdy Whitaker of Statesboro, Trey Daniel of 
Marietta, Taylor Daniel of Athens, Ty Daniel of Charlotte, NC, Julie Ann and 
Leah Akins of Nashville; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucy Akins of 
Nashville, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
 Funeral services were held November 14 at 3 p.m. at Community United Methodist 
Church with the Revs. Don Bridges and Wayne Mitchell and Elder Thad Marshall 
officiating.
 Interment was at Pleasant Cemetery.
 Memorial are requested to Community United Methodist Church or the Pleasant 
Cemetery Fund, c/o Louis Fountain, 5458 Old Valdosta Rd, Nashville, GA 31639.
 Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
