WILLIAM C. ELROD MEETS TRAGIC DEATH

Death came suddenly and unexpected to MR. WILLIAM C. ELROD, at Marion, NC on
Tuesday, August 15th, at about 6 o’clock p.m. Mr. Elrod was struck by a
locomotive of a train while his car was stalled on the track. The crossing was
a very hazardous one, and Mr. Elrod was seen to stop the pickup he was driving
before approaching the tracks. However, he drove on to the track and was caught
by a train which was running off schedule. His body was right badly bruised and
death was almost instantaneous.
His body was brought to Lavonia Wednesday and carried to the home of Mr.
W. M. Williams, where his mother lives, till the funeral service which was held
Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The services was conducted by Rev. Mr. Hind,
assisted by Rev. Mr. Jackson.
Weldon Funeral Home was in charge.
	The pall bearers were: Messrs. H. H. Bonner, G. D. Pulliam, O. D.
Cannon, Jr., J. R. Morgan, Joe Ferguson, and John Wesley Moorhead. Interment
was in Lavonia Cemetery.
Mr. Elrod is survived by his wife, the former Miss Nell Martin; a
daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Walker; his mother, Mrs. W. P. Elrod of Lavonia; a
sister, Mrs. W. M. Williams of Lavonia; and a brother, Mr. Garnet C. Elrod of
Toccoa. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Virginia Walker.
He was born in Carnesville on April 28, 1889, being 55 years of age at
the time of his death. Early in life the family moved to Lavonia where he spent
many years of his life. About 30 years ago, he was married to Miss Nell Martin
of Air Line, GA. After his marriage, he continued to live in Lavonia for
several years. The last 7 or 8 years of his life were spent in Hartwell and at
Ila. He had moved to Marion only about 6 months ago.
The news of his death brought sadness to the many who knew him in life.
There were witnesses to the tragedy. He must have thought the train was on
another track. The highway approaches the track by an incline. He stopped
before taking the ride up the inclined part of the road and seemed to stop right
on the track. When the car was struck, he was in the act of getting out of the
car, but was too late to avoid the tragedy. He had been a member of the
Methodist Church for many years.
