Silas K. Cannon, 87, died at his home in Lavonia, Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 1:40.  
He was one of the few remaining Confederate Veteran of the county.
Funeral services will be held today (Jan 4, 1934) at 11 o'clock at Fair View 
Methodist Church four miles west of Lavonia.
Mr. Cannon is survived by 10 children as follows:  Oscar, Abbeville, GA; J. W. 
and J. F., Cordele, GA; S. F. of Pineview, GA; O. D. Cannon, Mrs. Ada Mauldin, 
Mrs. R. (?) West, all of Lavonia; P. E., of Laurens, SC; Mack, of Cochran, GA; 
Mrs. Irene Warren of Abbeville, GA.
Mr. Cannon was born in Oconee County, SC, June 4, 1846.  He volunteered in the 
army at the age of 17, serving thirteen months in the Virginia Army.  He was 
in McGowan's Brigade and with Orr's Rifles.  Only thirteen of his company 
remained to the surrender and six rifles.  Mr. Cannon had one of them.  He was 
at the surrender and saw the apple tree under which Lee surrendered cut into 
pieces for souvenirs.
Mr. Cannon served for many years on the school board of Franklin County and 
was also county commissioner for several years. He had lived in Lavonia since 
1905.  He was married twice, his last wife passing away in 192(?).  He had 
been a member of the Methodist Church for 75 years.  He was a charter member 
of the Fairview Church and a trustee since its establishment in 1904.
No man in Franklin County was held in higher esteem than was Mr. Cannon.  
Throughout his long life, he endeavored to better conditions and to make 
people happier.  He was prominent in all affairs that meant the development of 
this section and his death removes a grand old man from our county.
