BOYS GET INTO TROUBLE

Arley Scantlin and Charley VanRipen, two Payette boys about 15 years of age
were arrested by Day Marshal Jeffries last Monday night and brought before
Probate Judge Ledman charged with burglary. A plea of guilty was entered by
the young men and both were committed to the State Industrial School at St.
Anthony.

The boys were evidently intending to do a wholesale job while they were at it,
as they had entered several houses and were cashing the goods in an empty
house in the west side of the town near the railroad track. They were
discovered while in the house occupied by J. M. Stevens near the Payette
Mills. Mrs. Stevens was away at the time and Mr. Stephens, on returning to
the house shortly after dark on Sunday evening heard some one leaving the
house by way of the kitchen door as he entered the front door. He quickly ran
around the house and captured the lads before they could make their escape.
Marshal Jeffries was notified and he brought them before Judge Ledman. Among
the articles stolen were two suits of clothes and a pair of shoes which were
taken from the Jap restaurant, and from other places, two ladies gold watches,
revolver, search light, khaki shirts, slippers, pocket knife, and a lot of
keys. Judge Ledman, who is also Deputy Sheriff, started for St. Anthony with
the boys Tuesday evening.
