Ashland Progress
J. E. Birchfield, son of J. 0. Birchfield of Pyriton, meet a tragic death in the 
ore mines of the Woodward Iron Company at Lipscomb, near Birmingham Saturday. 
According to information received here he. was employed by said company and was 
engaged in ore drilling when in some way a huge stone fell on his body, crushing 
his head frightfully and inflicting other injuries. His body was removed from the 
mine and placed in the care of an under taker and was brought back home for 
interment, the funeral being held at Concord Sunday afternoon. The young man was 
eighteen years and eleven months of age and had been employed at the Woodward 
mines for only a few months. He was a brother of Mrs. C. W. McKay of this city. 
Quite number from Ashland attended the funeral Sunday afternoon.
