Lineville Headlight
An explosion occurred at W W Bell's sawmill six miles east of Lineville last
Friday evening which resulted in the death of Clarence, the eight-year-old son
of Mr and Mrs W W Bell. The little boy was sitting near the exhaust or water
pipe of the engine which had become loosened by jamming wood into the engine,
and under the pressure of 100 pounds of steam an explosion occurred. The little
fellow was sitting a few feet from the pite but the noise occasioned by the
explosioned frightened, him and he rushed toward his mother who was on the other
side of the engine, opposite the pipe, and in doing so was struck by the
scalding steam and fire and blown a distance; of about fifteen feet. He threw
both arms up over his face and thereby protected his face but was otherwise
fearfully burned and scaldee from head to foot. The little fellow lingered in
pain until Saturday morning at 6 o'clock when he died and was buried at the
Lineville cemetery Saturday afternoon.
