 Mildred Smith Cotton, born Mildred Woodward Smith in Madison, FL passed away 
peacefull February 19, 2012 at Shell Point after a ten year struggle with 
Alzheimers disease. She was 90 years old.
 Known as Cissy, she was the second child of Charles Carroll Smith and Mildred 
Woodward Smith and is survived by her brother, two sons and their families, 
six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Her other two brothers, Columbus 
Smith and Charles Carroll Smith, pre-deceased her.
 A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2 pm, March 10, at 
the St Paul's Episcipal Church in Winter Haven.
 Cissy's family moved south to Winter Haven in 1931 where her father had 
purchased a hardware store. Mr. Smith ran the business until his untimely 
death in 1941. Cissy immediately returned from Macon, GA, where she had been 
attending Wesleyan College, to help run the family business.
 In 1945, after the loss of her first husband in the War. Cissy moved to NYC 
and helped returning soldiers re-enter the workplace and obtain educations 
through the GI Bill. On January 1, 1948 Cissy married Dr. Robert Henry Cotten, 
beginning a 54 year love affair that ended when Bob Cotton died in December in 
2004.
 After raising their boys in Rye, NY, the Cottons moved to Marco Island in 
1979 and then to Shell Point Village in Fort Myers,FL in 1997.
