I am searching the family of my mother who is 82 and was born and raised in Brewton, Al. Her grandfather was named Calvin Caraway McGugan Sr. b: 1823, some say he was a doctor, the 1870 census states his occupation as a farmer, her father was Calvin Caraway McGugan, Jr. I am looking for any information which ties all her family together. Her grandfather on her mother's side was Jesse B. Steel and her mother was Martha Jane Steel. According to family story, Martha Jane Steel McGugan was a nurse and worked in the office of Doctor John Mason. Calvin Caraway McGugan Sr. was appearantly married twice, first to a Williams and then to Mary (last name unknown) or visa versa. He had a daughters named Crovannah, Agnes, Ina Osyer, Mary and sons Neil, Sysrene Richard, and Calvin Caraway Jr. I am interested in parents, buial places and so on. I am in touch with the McGugans who spell their name McGougan in Appleton. I am in contact with over 350 McGugans across the United States, many are decendants of the Escambia county McGugans. Most seem to know very little about their ancestors and are looking to me to find their roots. Many of the McGugans are buried in the Weaver Cemetary. There is another cemetary as I am told by my mother on the other side of Brewton where her mother and the rest are buried but she cannot remember where it is. My mother left Brewton at age 14. She had ciblings, Jenny Lee, John Edward, Carrie Dell, Francis Julia, Estia Curtis and Emma Lucretia. Any and all information you have, no matter how trivial it may seem will and can be used to build the family tree. I will share my information with those who provide usable information to me. The surnames I am interested in are Godwin, Birch, Steel(e), McGugan, McGugin, McGoogan, McGougan, McGoogin, McGougin, Wilson, Davis and Brown. Thank you in advance for any assistance you be able to provide. Dallas Johnson P.O. 325 Alpharetta, GA 30009-0325 Phone: 770-343-8936 Bus. 770-475-2841 Home 770-410-0182 FAX.

Searching for parents of Seth H. and William John KIRKLAND. Seth b. 1830 GA and W. J. b. bet. 1837-1841 GA. Unable to locate W. J. on 1850 census in either Georgia or Florida. Found Seth on 1850 Gadsden Co., FL Census.
W.J. stated on his CSA Military Records at time of enlistment that he left "no wife, no child, no mother and no father". I would assume both parents were deceased by April 1862, date of enlistment.
Does anyone researching KIRKLANDs in Alabama have a William John Kirkland age 9-11 in 1850? I am at a dead end until I can find their parents. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it. I wonder if maybe he was living with relatives in Alabama in 1850 since I know he wasn't in GA or FL. Will exchange info with other researchers. Ida - Georgia

William Cole Armistead, Jr. Sun Aug 3 15:55:45 1997
I was born May 29,1944, in Campbell, AL the son of William Cole Armistead and Emma Belle Armistead, currently residents of Thomasville. My grandfather was Dr. Livingston Lee Armistead, my great grandfather was Westwood Armistead, my great, great grandfather was William Westwood Armistead and my great, great, great grandfather was Captain William Armistead who served in the Revolutionary War and is burried in Clarke County. I have been unable to go back any further than the Captain and want very much to trace my family back to William "The Emigrant" Armistead who came from Yorkshire, England in 1634. Two other prominent Armisteads with a distinguished military career are Major George Armistead, who was in command of Ft. McHenry when Frances Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner while Armistead was flying old glory during the battle with the British. To get to the bottom of my story: I am trying to find out who Captain William's father is. They came from North Carolina, but the Captain's father supposedly died when he was a little boy and lived in North Carolina. Anything that you can do to help me with this project would be greatly appreciatead. Thanks! D H Gilbert Tue Aug 5 23:38:53 1997
Garvis Gilbert of Baltimore (now Harford) County, Maryland had five sons to settled in Bedford (now Campbell) County, Virginia prior to the Revolutionary War. After the Revolution, most of the Gilbert families moved to Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. Several descendants of these families moved to Alabama after it became a state in 1819, settling especially in Cherokee, Etowah, St Clair and Jefferson Counties. Many of the descendants from Spartanburg County, South Carolina migrated with members of the Littlefield family. I would like to learn more about these Gilbert families who settled in Alabama.

Desperately seeking Permelia! She was born 1835-1838 in AL. She married Phillip Thomas KING (per oral history) location unknown. Their children were named Seth Thomas King, Julia Louise King, Sterling Price King and Eliza King all born in TX around 1860. The story: "I came to Texas in a wagon with a wife, a Georgia Stock (plow) and $5.00 in my pocket. We believe they arrived in before 1858(birth of oldest child). Any leads would be helpfull. This family has hit a dead end. There are no Census or other records with Phillip T. King nor Permelia ? before 1870 Census. Phillip may have died before 1870 in TX because she remarried three years later. Thanks!

Hi Everybody! I have a knotty problem. According to a death certificate of a great grandfather, Arch W. Johnson, he was born in Alabama, as were his father and mother. I think my best bet is the Census Index for 1850, 1860, but I don't have access to this. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Here's what I know. Arch W. Johnson, died in Butler County, Ash Hill Township, Quilin, Missouri on Jan 10, 1929. Info was provided by Joe Johnson. Arch was born on Feb 28, 1851 in Alabama. His father was William Johnson who was born in Alabama and his mother is listed as "Evans" who was also born in Alabama. I know this isn't much, but it's all I have to go on. Thanks!

I am searching for information about Lindsey Cummins. The story is that Lindsay was murdered in Ala. while married to Caroline Rush. His son, Rubin, is said to have been with him and brought his body home. This is said to have happened in about 1874. In the 1860 census, there is a Caroline listed as "Cummins" instead of "Cromeans", but since Lindsey is shown in that census with Pernesia, I doubt that this is Caroline Rush Cummins. Pernesia died between the 1860 and 1870 census since Lindsey is shown with Caroline, age 43 b. in Tn., in the 1870 census. Since there is a four year gap between Clarinda age 8 in 1870 and Felix age 4 in 1870, it is possible that Pernesia died about 1862. Lindsey and Caroline may have married about 1864, but this marriage may not be found since so many courthouses burned during the "War of Northern Aggression." Ruben and his siblings are shown in the 1880 census of Maury Co., Tn. Lindsey's father was Jacob, son of Jacob. The siblings were Sarah, Elizabeth, Caroline, Parker, Mary, Margaret, Vinea, Hancock and Susan. I have lots of info to share on this family. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking information on the parents of my gg-grandfather Pleasant CRENSHAW, born SC 1813 or 1815. His 1st wife Elizabeth was born about 1810 in GA. Because of the naming of the children I suspect Elizabeth maiden name or Pleasant's mother's maiden name to be DARVEL. I am also suspect of the names William, James, Anel, & Pleasant as possible fathers. Pleasant CRENSHAW had migrated to Neshoba County, MS by 1843, when his oldest child was born. I suspect that he was living in Alabama with relatives in 1840. I believe that he may be associated in some way with either the HOUSTON, GULLY, or CALCOAT families.
